Hey holiday pals, it's that time again! What time, you ask? Why, it's time for my semi-annual Christmas mix! This year, as always, I've tried to dig up a few nuggets you may not have heard before along with unusual versions of those hoary old "classics" you hear in every shop, elevator, and circle of Hell.

This actually marks the first time I've released a Christmas compilation to the public at large. The cover image is by my friend [info]runstaverun and I apologize to him for taking so damn long to put it into play after asking his permission long ago. I hope this collection passes muster with y'all. Peace, love, and best wishes for 2009. --Tim

Recently our New England comics collective Trees & Hills released our new music-related anthology of comics. It comes with a CD of tunes by comic creators. I have a goofy track on there. Here's my comic for the book, a 5-page non-fiction retelling of what happened to a band I like.

it gets sadder under the cut... )

I'm looking forward to drawing something a bit lighter for our next anthology, which is all about FOOD. Hellz yes.

Current Location: Cloud 9
Current Music: Richard Hawley - "Lady's Bridge" LP
I got a decent audience recording with my MZ-M100 MD recorder! I've been trying for over a year with very mixed results, usually ranging from "recorded so loud it's all muffled and blown out" to "even worse than that."

But last night I went to see ace crooner Richard Hawley in Boston and I finally got my levels set right. Here's a tune for proof, with banter beforehand:

Richard Hawley - "Born Under a Bad Sign" (live)

It's not the old blues song by that name, by the way.

The best part of being an American who's into British musicians is that they're usually much less known in the States, so you get to see them in a more intimate setting. I've seen Supergrass at least twice now, in USA and Japan, and both times were in small or medium-sized clubs where you could get right up front. Back in England they play larger venues, from what I've read. Hawley was the same way last night. He's a genius songwriter but I got to see him at TT the Bear's, one of the smallest clubs I've ever seen. It's so tiny that back in 2001 when I took my girlfriend there to see Momus, we and other audience members were able to saunter right over to the dressing room off to the left of the stage, knock on the door, and meet one of our favorite musicians without any fuss. Very cool.

I love the new Manic Street Preachers album. It's freaking rad, man. The first single is a duet with Nina from the Cardigans, and you can hear it here:

It hasn't got a stateside release yet but the import's cheap. And of course, there are even cheaper ways to get it. *cough cough*

Current Music: Elliott Smith, bien sur
Alright, so maybe this will only interest Jennifer Omand. But still, I'm psyched to report that there's a double CD collection of unreleased Elliott Smith stuff coming! Granted, us Elliott fans have most of this stuff already in bootleg form but I'm sure this will sound miles better.

On May 8, 2007, Kill Rock Stars will release a double CD of music by Elliott Smith entitled New Moon. The album contains 24 songs recorded 1994-1997, a prolific time in Smith's career, when he recorded his self-titled album and Either/Or (both also released by Kill Rock Stars).

Disc 1

Angel In The Snow
Talking To Mary
High Times
New Monkey
Looking Over My Shoulder
Going Nowhere
Riot Coming
All Cleaned Out
First Timer
Go By
Miss Misery (early version)
Thirteen

Disc 2

Georgia Georgia
Whatever (Folk Song in C)
Big Decision
Placeholder
New Disaster
Seen How Things Are Hard

[info]jasonturner tagged me on this meme.

List seven songs you are into right now, no matter what the genre, whether they have words, or even if they're not any good but they must be songs you're really enjoying now. Post these instructions in your Live Journal along with your seven songs. Then tag seven other people to see what they're listening to.

Since JTO tagged me and he likes 80s stuff, I'll make this 7 British rock tracks from the 1980s:

Chameleons - Don't Fall
Close Lobsters - Going To Heaven To See If It Rains (JL sessions 88)
It's Immaterial - Driving Away From Home (Wicked Weather For Walking)
The The - The Beat(en) Generation
Echo & the Bunnymen - Lips Like Sugar
The Beat - Mirror In the Bathroom
New Model Army - Frightened

You can download them all by clicking here. Hope you like at least one. Have a great weekend, peoples.

I tag Meagan, Sara, Tom McHank, Anthony, Robin Bougie, Uncle, and Jeff Bent!
